What is Jurisdiction?
At its core, jurisdiction refers to a court’s legal authority to hear and decide a case. For a court to have jurisdiction, it must have:
1. Subject matter jurisdiction– the power to hear the type of case brought before it.
2. Personal jurisdiction – the authority over the people involved in the case.
3. Territorial jurisdiction – the authority within a particular geographic area (like a county or state).
